Secret Love Affair

4 episodes in and I’m absolutely hooked and more than a little bit in love with this drama.

My preview shot shows the main lead Lee Seon Jae peeking into a performance rehearsal from the sidelines and being captivated by the piano as well as Oh Hye Won. It sums up the slightly illicit feeling that is steeped through this drama – the lure and desire for the forbidden and the passion that lies beneath the surface.

My drama watching schedule is pretty packed these days, but I picked this one up due to the cast (who I like) and the early buzz surrounding the chemistry between the two leads. Normally, I like my dramas as light and fluffy escapist romcoms with the occasional foray into melodramas (where I torture myself with all the extreme makjang twists and turns and evil characters doing morally incomprehensible things). But this drama is different – it’s a pure drama – with some superb storytelling, cinematography, music and above all the cast are playing their parts to perfection.

From the outset, I wasn’t overly thrilled with the synopsis:

Oh Hye Won is a woman in her forties who feels that she’s leading a fulfilling life. Elegant, sophisticated and excellent at dealing with people, she spares no effort in her quest for success as the director of planning for the Seohan Arts Foundation. But then she meets Lee Seon Jae, a twenty-something genius pianist from an impoverished background, who is unaware of his ability and works as a quick delivery guy. Hye Won experiences for the first time what truly falling in love is like, and she and Seon Jae begin a passionate affair which they must keep secret because it threatens to unravel both their lives.” (wikipedia)

Affairs are bad m’kay and although I like a noona romance, a twenty year age gap was pushing that envelope a bit. But colour me surprised because I’m on board with this now.

Here are my current obsessions with this drama.

The cinematography

Every shot in this drama seems carefully considered, and planned out. I’m really appreciating the attention to detail and above all the breathing space that the PD has allowed for so many of the scenes in this drama. I love the lingering panning shots, the lighting, the way that characters are framed. It’s serving the story so well and above all looks beautiful on screen. I feel like I’m watching a movie sometimes and not just a drama

The music

I love a drama that is based in the world of music (see: Nodame Cantabile, Orange Days etc) and well… my hotness scale includes bonus points for piano playing – so it’s not at all a surprise that I’m adoring the focus on the piano here. The background music, as well as the live pieces are so lovely though and because music is what our characters connect through it’s a bright thread that weaves in and out through each episode.

The characters

FINALLY – a writer who knows how to make each character seem whole and complex. There are no stock ‘villains’ and everyone is flawed and feels real. I like that I’m still figuring out the tangled relationships between characters 4 episodes in – and that there’s not really anything being hammered home with the subtlety of a brick. I’m enjoying watching things unfold – and even some of the more ‘typical’ drama twists have been presented in a way that makes them seem naturally a part of the story.

The actors

Yoo Ah In is KILLING me as Seon Jae. I love how he reacts to things so clearly – you can see emotions flit across his features – the way his hunched posture conveys the characters feelings. AISH! Plus he’s able to cry really well (hehehe). He has some amazing chemistry with Kim Hee Ae (Hye Won) and she has pulled me in as well. I’m completely invested in her character and I can’t wait to see the tipping point – where she will ‘give in’ to this illicit affair that is so tempting.

So in summary – highly recommended so far! Best of all this is airing on a cable channel – so there is a high possibility of some sexy funtimes (not that is you know, my sole reason for watching this series *cough*)

JTBC has an epic 20 min preview vid up on their channel (alas no subs – but you don’t really need them!)

Or Dramafever’s teaser should give you a good idea too.

Me: My shallow throwing over of (Sung)gyu for Joonie – NO REGRETS!
Seungho OMG mmmmmmm
G.O. too

Aimee: Mir is now a man

Me: Awww puppy is all grown up
Cheondongie looks good too
Waaaaah I’m perving on Cheondongie
Oooh I like the song
Yay those vocals

Kakao Chat – Monday, 24 March 2014

So MBLAQ’s new album and MV was released today. Alas I was low on bandwidth on my phone so had to wait until I got home to perve on hot boys watch the MV.

A few days ago, I may have joked that although I love and adore Sunggyu as my ultimate bias if I could pick any idol of my choosing for funtimes, I’d be totally shallow and go for Lee Joon. 🙂 What can I say… he has hypnotised me with abs and I may have a soft spot for his utter failure as an idol in variety and the way he so loves ruining his image.
And now I need to go make loads of sexy gifs…

100% Beat – Dance Version MV

100-1     100-2
100-5     100-6
100-7     100-8

Mmmm hot boys!
With bonus boytouching!

100% released their dance version today and I was rather appreciative of the hot eye candy in this one. The original MV has a much darker tone with vampires, piano abuse and blood and gore with a storyline that is somewhat confusing involving a girl who has either resurrected them and is planning to use them as her own personal warriors what with all the weird armor she seems to be constructing, or has some severe trust issues.

I totally spotted the re-use of the DBSK Mirotic set though – my feeeeeels! So it’s good to see more half clothed hot boys dancing there. 🙂

100% are alas only 5 members with this promotion – Minwoo has left for the army (nooooo!) and Sanghoon is on a break. I teased Aimee rather mercilessly in Korea when she bought their mini album – but it turns out that they’re all overage – totally legal to perve on admire.

I like the song and have pre-ordered the album with mnet seeing as they are doing a signed meet & greet – yay!

Cunning Single Lady / Sly and Single Again – Episode 7
SeungHyun continues to be adorable and steal my heart

Emily: Oh God, I’m watching the school uniform ep of This is Infinite
*dying emoji*

Me: Waaaah
I can’t watch it
I will die
I need to prepare myself

Emily: Gyu is the prefect

Me: OMG nope
I can’t
I can’t cope with that
I need alcohol and a weekend

Emily: It is amazing

Me: I mean it
I’ll just expire from glee

Emily: Oh God, I could really use some alcohol right now
*passed out emoji*

Me: *wailing and crying emoji*
There will be ugly crying
my ultimate bias as a prefect
Save me
If he’s wearing glasses, I don’t know that I’ll live

Emily: He’s not wearing glasses!
Sungyeolie is!

Me: Waaaaae
OK I need to get on a plane

Emily: Sungjongie has a bandaid stuck to his face

Me: I need to be held as I rock back and forth as my mind melts

I’m not even kidding… This show is literally killing me, to the point that I’m about 3 episodes behind because I can’t cope with my feels when I watch it hahahahaha!! Aish – Sunggyu is just too adorable (and the rest of Infinite too.)

The “I feel death” is the result of a misheard lyric. Aimee and I were on a plane in China and going through some rough turbulence. We were listening to the awesome playlists that the plane had – yay planes in Asia having kpop channels! – and Sunggyu’s solo ‘Because’ was one of the songs. The actual lyric is “I feel that…” but it TOTALLY does not sound that way… Not the greatest thing to hear on a rough descent into *I think* Beijing… We may have had a fit of the giggles and the phrase has now entered our collective lexicon.

Swing Teaser

suju-m-1   suju-m-2
suju-m-3   suju-m-4
suju-m-5   suju-m-6

Yay! Finally!

SM operates on their own pseudo timezone; so when they say they’ll release a teaser in the afternoon, they really mean evening…

I’m pretty excited for this release, seeing as Suju were a Kpop gateway for me (one of my first loves!) and it was Suju-M at that! Blame Donghae and Siwon for being in a Hong Kong based drama version of Skip Beat and my curiosity over the cute Korean boys, particularly the one playing Shou… (although those lingering shots of Siwon getting out of the pool were appreciated too)

Breakdown was also technically the first actual album that I bought, starting the obsessive collection that I have today.

2014 is already a great year in KPop so far! I’m pleased to see that this teaser seems to have an actual plot! *dies of shock* not a typical box set! Not that I’m opposed to Suju style box sets, but I’m hopeful for more super cute goofing around – maybe some beach shirtless scenes of that holiday that Sungmin has circled and Siwon is seemingly dreaming about.

More of these big band swing style mvs please!

The album is scheduled to drop on the 21st of March so I need to get my preorder sorted now!

AISH SM – bankrupt me already why don’t you! All I need now is Henry to announce his comeback…

#2 Infinite

Barely missing out on my #1 spot of all-time favourite groups is Infinite – purely because SHINee had a 3 month or so head start…

If I could combine them into one super group of awesomeness I would. Wait… SHINfinite is totally a thing now!

So, story time…

Some months ago, Emily had a funny dream in which she and Aimee were in charge of co-ordinating outfits for SHINee and Infinite (let’s face it, a dream job – “Woohyun, strip down so I can run my hands all over you measure you for this shirt”). We howled with laughter at the time because the two groups weren’t even in the same company so the probability of this wasn’t even on the cards, but then the news came out about the Woolim / SM Entertainment merger and *doo doo doo doo twilight zone* then she suddenly became super psychic and prescient.

We are completely OK with the merger, seeing as SM aren’t entirely made of evil (COME AT ME FANGIRLS) because now there are more opportunities for our faves to appear on the same stage. Even better there is already an awesome sub-unit with Woohyun and Key – Toheart!

Back to Infinite!

Not to mention they are SUPER cute and awesome at variety. All of their variety shows kill me and I need time to recover after watching them. You should check out at the very least their “Sesame Player” “Ranking King” “Birth of a Family” and their latest show “This is Infinite”. (and ALL of their appearances on “Weekly Idol” and “High Society” just to see poor Sunggyu be tortured)

I was lucky enough to see Infinite live in concert last year in Hiroshima for their ‘One Great Step’ world tour. Aimee and I were 8 rows back from the front, and because of the way that the rows flowed around the stage, we were essentially only a few feet away from our idols at one of the main focal points. They were so close, that we could have jumped the barrier and touched them! And we had some fantastic personal interaction with them (haha Dongwoo and his hilarious double take at us in a sea of Japanese fans!). I scored an amazing souvenir – a signed paper plane from Woohyun, and Aimee and I had a truly unforgettable night.

Leader and Main Vocal
My ULTIMATE BIAS in all of KPop
Has a brilliant solo album “Another Me”

Aish Gyu… I will devote a whole post to you soon, as you are my ultimate bias. I adore him because of his amazing voice, but also because he is a giant dork and a Fail Leader (I say this with a lot of love and affection – these are good points) plus he has the cutest ever slight lisp. If I had to pin-point the moment where my love was turned into, yep, this is it, this is my ultimate bias – it would be from their Birth of a Family reality show and when he was left alone with the puppies… I think my squeals were heard in Melbourne… I totally dragged persuaded the girls to the filming site of his MV ’60 seconds’ when we were in Seoul so I could fangirl.

Main Rapper & Lead Dancer
Sub-Unit -‘ Infinite H’
Emily’s Bias

Super adorable and an early love for me – I managed to pick him out fairly quickly as he’s so 4D in variety. I blame him and Hoya for the rap & hip hop invasion in our kpop collection because of Infinite H. I may have had a meltdown at Aimee during ‘Special Girl’ at the concert when they did the super cute wiggle dance like 3 feet in front of us… Plus Dongwoo winked at us – aish!

’91 Liner
Main Vocal
King of Fanservice (also aaaaaabs)
Subunit – ‘Toheart’ with SHINee’s Key

Because Gyu is my ultimate bias, I get to pick again in Infinite – YAY! So technically Woohyun is my Infinite bias (yes, this is a TOTES legitimate rule). Woohyun is a walking fanservice dream – throwing hearts left, right and center and saying the greasiest things… Plus, he sings really really well! I have his signature as a part of my shrine collection. He will kind of hypnotise you in the MV’s due to his various states of shirtlessness and camera flirting.

’91 Liner
Main Rapper
Subunit – ‘Infinite H’
Appeared in  the drama ‘Reply 1997’

Super athletic – he tends to dominate in idol athletics and anything competitive – he’s also very charismatic in real life. Although at one point in the concert he was at the focal point in front of us, But Sunggyu was to the left (my bias) and Sungyeol to the right (Aimee’s bias) so… well… we kind of directed our squee away from him *feels so bad* I still love you Hoya! He rocked the satoori dialect in ‘Reply 1997’ and needs to do more dramas 주세요

’91 Liner
Subunit – ‘Infinite F’
Aimee’s Bias

Poor Yeollie – he gets none of the lines! You can literally count on one hand for most songs – and sometimes not even 1 (I’m looking at you Nothing’s Over) He makes up for it with his charm and personality in everything else, plus those long long legs… Aimee’s obsessive love for him has totally influenced me – to the point that he’s really a bias list ruiner and I can’t really rank Infinite at all now – they’re just one big boy pile of awesome.

LL (Myungsoo)
’92 Liner
Vocal & Visual
Too pretty to live
Dramas ‘Shut Up Flower Boy Band’ ‘Master’s Sun’ ‘Sly and Single Again’
Subunit – ‘Infinite F’

L really is too pretty – we kind of creepily stared at him when he was all in his ‘L’ persona in front of us. That perfect skin… *ahem* Well he is cute as a button too and I enjoy him in his dramas, despite the ‘idol actor’ criticism he seems to get. I prefer his non-reserved Myungsoo personality where he’s a bit more derpy and relatable.

’93 Liner
Vocalist & Maknae
Subunit – ‘Infinite F’

My not so secret bias. Sigh… I just… OK so he did a RIDICULOUS amount of aegyo right in front of me and slayed this noona’s heart and I haven’t recovered AT ALL from it, where before the concert he was in my ‘untouchable’ pile and now he’s the King of the Maknaes (and prince of feather crowns). Jongie went though a phase of wanting to not be the cute maknae, but he seems to have given in, and now pours it on to the point that I can’t deal with how adorable he is. I *may* have my laptop background as a series of rotating Sungjong pics so he can continue to brainwash me.

Infinite have a very distinctive “sound” in the KPop world. It’s sort of disco-feel-pop with a side of power vocal (if that could be a thing). Two of my all-time favourite main vocals are joined by 2 rappers and 3 vocalists to make some amazing discography.

Releasing in both Korea and Japan and with 2 subunits (soon to be 3) as well as the leader’s solo album – they have a lot of music

Top 5 MV’s (Korea)

5. Nothing’s Over – Sungyeol has no lines – but he’s the main lead! Also suuuuper cute

4. Destiny – mmmm hot boys! With super powers!

Bedding Scenes

Me: Lololol
Ahhhhh I want to watch it
I won’t be home until super late

Emily: Toheart’s mv making kekeke

Me: All the bedding the scenes
… behind the scenes

Emily: LOL

Me: That was a great typo

Aimee: Kekeke

Emily: I did not even question it

SM released a fantastic SHINee hidden camera ‘Supporting Message’, where the members basically heaped shit on Key for keeping his Toheart subunit a big fat secret (lol supporting message, my butt), and it was filled with some glorious JongKey moments. I managed to finally watch it later in the week when the girls reminded me that I had forgotten. Boo being busy and overworked when there is fannish spazzing to do!
